   Our Story

Manipueira Gold Recovery Technology Inc. (MGRT),a British Columbia-incorporated company, has pioneered an ESG-driven climate action initiative, innovative technology, solution, and transformative strategy aimed at replacing mercury and cyanide salts in artisanal small-scale mining (ASM) with Manipueira, an extract solution from the abundantly available bitter cassava plant. 

Artisanal and small-scale gold (ASG) miners worldwide contribute significantly to the global gold supply, but the use of mercury in gold recovery poses severe environmental and health risks.

Our proposed Manipueira Leaching Center innovation is designed to process ore and toxic tailings wastes in a sustainable and efficient manner. By harnessing the power of manipueira, a plant-based extract solution derived from the cyanogenic bitter cassava plant, we have discovered a leaching method that outperforms traditional techniques.

Our leaching protocol using manipueira as a lixiviant allows for the extraction of 2-3 times more gold compared to mercury usage, while also enabling faster and cost-effective extraction of gold from toxic tailings wastes and ore without the need for cyanide salts

Approximately 20 million artisanal and small-scale gold (ASG) miners including 4.5 million women and 600,000 children under the age of 15, all largely suffering from undiagnosed mercury poisoning, use mercury to recover gold from ore and produce an estimated 20% of the world’s annual supply valued at USD $30 billion which is used in our jewellery, computers, iPad, iPhone, and other e-devices.

After extensive research and collaboration with experts dedicated to mitigating the health risks posed by mercury and its detrimental effects on global biodiversity, Manipueira Gold advocates for a broader approach to this critical issue.

This approach includes targeting ore processing centers, which collectively process an estimated 85-90% of the ore from approximately 18-20 million impoverished artisanal miners in about 80 countries annually using mercury.
